City Hall Renovation 2004

Update #1
July 2, 2004

Renovations have begun on City Hall. The demolition process was delayed when asbestos was found in the plaster. Demolition and Asbestos removal began in February. Sub-contractors were selected in June and the first stages of renovation have begun.

The demolition crews have been working in the building. The main floor has had all of the "1960's remodeling" removed (office dividing walls and ceilings). The beautiful original architecture that has been revealed after almost half a century. Pleasant surprises have been found in numerous places including original detailed plaster in the small conference room (sections have deteriorated and may not be salvaged), beautiful high ceilings and portions of the original windows have been uncovered. Hardwood floors have been unveiled on the main floor and may be refinished.

The second floor has the most notable changes with the removal of the ceiling/attic floor. This was necessary so that floor trusses can be installed for the attic area which will become the Council Chambers. At this time you can look up to the roof rafters and feel dwarfed by the openness in the area.

Fencing has been installed outside the building to contain the Construction Site and prevent any injuries. Some excavating has been done to begin the process of lowering the parking lot to the basement level of the building that will provide barrier free access to the building. An elevator will access all levels of the building.

The following pictures show some of the highlights listed above.
