City Hall Renovation 2004

Work continues on the renovation of City Hall. The exterior of this majestic limestone building is receiving a gentle washing removing almost a century of exposure to our northern Michigan climate. This washing is revealing the wonderful condition of the building and how it will continue to service our community for generations to come.

Excavation on the west side of the building is nearing completion. A portion of the original retaining wall has been kept and the parking lot is now on one level. This will expand the parking area, allow direct access to the lowest level of the building, provide barrier free access to all floors and serve as the main entrance to the Police Department.

Crews have begun removal of the stairs on the east side of the building. This is a time consuming project with crew members taking turns using jackhammers on the steps. This stairway will be reconstructed and exterior lights will be installed to match the original lights.

Interior work continues. Renovation plans include installation of an elevator, air conditioning, and new plumbing, electrical, and heating systems. Some of the original fixtures will be reused in the renovation project.
